The Sacred Circuit of Uttarakhand
The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in India, located in the high Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It consists of four holy sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Performing this yatra is believed to wash away all sins and help achieve liberation.
1. Yamunotri
Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, this is the first stop of the Yatra. The temple is located near hot water springs like Surya Kund, where pilgrims cook rice as Prasad. The trek is approximately 6 km from Janki Chatti.
2. Gangotri
Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, Gangotri temple stands on the banks of Bhagirathi River. The river originates at the Gaumukh glacier, which is a popular trekking destination for spiritual seekers and adventurers alike.
3. Kedarnath
Home to one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath is nestled near the Mandakini River amidst snow-capped peaks. Accessing the temple requires a 16 km trek from Gaurikund, or a helicopter ride. It is a symbol of faith and resilience.
4. Badrinath
The final destination of the Yatra, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Located along the Alaknanda River, Badrinath is famous for its colorful temple facade and the hot sulfur springs of Tapt Kund, where pilgrims bathe before visiting the deity.
